This is perhaps the most important of Jack London's books. Written after he had spent months living in the slums of London's East End as an out-of-work sailor, it pre-dates George Orwell's „Down and out in London and Paris“ by a good many years. Sleeping in casual wards, doss houses, mingling with the destitute and the starving he observed for himself the sufferung, and from his experiences he produced this penetrating study of poverty – one of the most valuable social documents of our time.
