From the author/producer of a series of musical travelogues comes a set of three rituals associated with Sufism, the mystical branch of Islam. The Mevlevi Dervishes have become famed around the world for their stately whirling ceremonies, accompanied by what has become a form of Islamic classical music. Through the medium of the steady beat of the music and the rhythm of their own breathing, the dervishes enter a trance state that exists somewhere between heaven and earth — for which reason they whirl with one arm pointing down and one pointing skyward. Less known in the West but more obviously trancey are the Halveti-Jerrahi Dervishes, who are represented here by two pieces. The first, one of their so-called "howling" prayers, builds up to a mighty crescendo using massed voices that only occasionally coalesce; the second is a zikr, a trance ritual that involves the rhythmic chanting of the names of God.
