Salim Erich Spohr, born in 1947, studied psychology at the University of Cologne, then philosophy in Bonn, Tübingen and again in Bonn, followed by a master’s degree with a thesis on the problem of the thing-in-itself according to Kant (Prof. Gerold Prauss), received a teaching position at the Philosophical Seminar of the University of Cologne and held very well-attended seminars on Heidegger, Kant, Plato, Descartes and Wittgenstein. A scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation enabled him to research the problem of certainty and to get to know the remarkable way in which this basic problem of occidental epistemology is viewed in Islamic culture (yaqîn/tawakkul).
At the age of forty, he declared his faith in Islam, through his teacher, Shaykh Muªammad Nâ|im ‘Âdil al-Óaqqânî, who until his death had been his master for 26 years. Already in his early days as a murîd, the Shaykh assigned him to lead the Friday prayers, entrusted him with various tasks and brought him to Cyprus eighteen years ago, appointed him as Imam of the Ziya Pasa mosque in the Greek part of the island, and charged him with regularly visiting the maqâm of “Hala Sultan” in his stead.
For 30 years Salim and his wife lady Hagar have been running their publishing house recently under the name of Spohr Publishers, in 2024 he founded Hic Salta Press.
